Dr Ebbens is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield where he has pursued varied materials research, with a particular interest in colloids, microfluidics and self-optimising manufacturing.

Portrait of Dr Ebbens

Dr Ebbens moved to Sheffield after working as a PDRA developing inkjet printing manufacturing methods for the electronics industry at the University of Loughborough. This PDRA followed five years working as a Senior Scientist at a SME Pharmaceutical contract research company (Molecular Profiles) in Nottingham. Dr Ebbens holds a degree in Chemistry and a PhD, both obtained at the University of Durham.

Research Group – past and present

Nur Azali is a first year PhD student in my research group, working on colloidal synthesis, and active colloids for drug delivery.

Chris Passmore is a second year PhD student in my research group, working on optimising the roll to roll manufacture of high value coatings for energy storage and generation applications.

Dr Gary Dunderdale was a PDRA in my research group working to develop a self-optimising roll to roll coating platform for structured coatings that can serve as components in emerging batteries, solar cells and optoelectronics devices.  Gary now works at the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre as an experimental officer.

Dr Luke Price is a graduated PhD student who developed methods to attach CO2 reduction photo catalysts to solid surfaces.

Dr Alice Wilson is a graduated PhD student who investigated the effect of shape on the behaviour of catalytic colloids motion.

Dr Andrew Campbell worked as a PDRA in my research group on a range of active colloid projects.  We are currently collaborating via a grant held by Prof.  Jon Howse at the University of Sheffield to work on the continuous manufacture of high value films.

Dr Yi Zhang worked as a PDRA in my research group printing silk materials that can produce motion for a variety of sensing applications.

Dr Richard Archer worked as a PDRA in my research group using his skills in colloidal synthesis to develop new stimuli responsive catalytic swimming devices.  Richard also obtained his PhD in my research group.  Richard now works in Japan at Tohoko University and is an ongoing collaborator.

Dr Ehtsham U. Haq worked as a PDRA in my group, developing methods to characterise polymer blend formation. He now works at the University of Limerick, Ireland.

Dr David Gregory is a graduated PhD student, who performed experiments to increase understanding for active colloids, as well as developing silk micro-rockets, and microstirring devices.  David is now working as a PDRA in the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, the University of Sheffield and is an ongoing collaborator.
